WHEN discussing his prospects ahead of Friday night’s Inter Dominion Final at Gloucester Park, local horseman Phil Costello summed up the occasion perfectly.

In fact, Costello’s statement embodies the spirit of being involved in the time honoured Championship.

Sure his entrant Vultan Tin is the rank outsider, but that means little to Costello.

For the record, Vultan Tin is a $101 on TAB Fixed Odds, while Lazarus is a $2.10 favourite. Vultan Tin’s original quote was $151.

“I’m living the harness racing dream of having a runner in the Inter Dominion Final,” Costello declared. “It’s my first Grand Circuit runner, so it’s great.

“I had faith in him from the start. He has made a few, not many though, takes notice.

“Lazarus is without doubt the one to beat as he’s just got so much depth. After that it is a raffle for second.”

Listed at 39 on the first rankings, Vultan Tin forced his way into the 30-horse cut off before finishing third, fourth and sixth in his heats to gain a berth in the Group One.

The son of Dawn Ofa New Day will begin from barrier three, with Costello confident Vultan Tin will have no problem with the 2936-metre journey.

Talented reinsman Chris Voak will partner the six-year-old, which is having his final fast work this morning.

“The distance shouldn’t be a problem,” Costello said. “He has run some strong 2536-metre races, so he will have an extra few hundred metres in him.

“I’m happy with his draw and from there will be looking to drop into a good trail.

“He’s standing next to me now as I’m about to hopple him. That will be his last fast work before having a jog during the next two days.”
