ASTUTE horseman Paul Nairn is confident Ronald J can continue his seamless transition to the top when he heads to Addington today.

Engaged in the New Zealand Trotting Free-For-All, the son of Love You is the lightest-raced runner in the field with just 12 starts to his name.

Despite the gelding’s inexperience, Nairn believes Ronald J is ready to capture the Group One.

“He has been working fine since his last run and is in peak condition,” Nairn said. “He hasn’t done a lot of racing, but the ability is there.

“He was just immature and needed to strengthen up and be safer in his gait, so I took time with him.

“He feels like a horse which can really stay and has got speed to go with it…he’s got a lot of things going for him.”

Adding to Nairn’s faith is Ronald J’s draw, with the five-year-old to begin from barrier two.

“I think it is a good draw for him,” Nairn said. “From there it gives him a chance of leading, but even if he is parked for a bit, it wouldn’t worry him.

“Coming from two does give him options and I’m sure he will go very close.

“It’s a nice field with a lot of solid chance, so we will just have to see how it works out, but I’m happy with him going into the race and he has the right draw too.”
