OUTSTANING trotter Monbet is expected to trial next week.
Having pleased co-trainer Greg Hope with his work on the beach during the weekend, the multiple Group One winner is slated to make a public appearance at the Ashburton workouts.
Monbet’s preparation was interrupted after the squaregaiter developed heat in a front leg about three weeks ago.
A scan showed some aggravation of a minor injury he sustained as a three-year-old, but Hope stated it is “under control”.
“His training has been good,” Hope said. “He trotted around on the beach this morning and I was happy with his work.
“We’ll just see how he progresses over the next week and whether he goes to the trials next week we will play it by ear. He’s still got a good chance to make the (NZ) Cup meeting all things going good.
“We are happy with him and each day he seems that much better. He was trotting well today.”
Should Monbet continue to impress Hope, he will be aimed at the $30,000 Ashburton Flying Mile in a fortnight.
The main aim remains the $300,000 Dominion Handicap at Addington on November 17.
Monbet captured last year’s edition of the time-honoured event in a New Zealand record 4:00.7, but the brilliant son of Love You has not raced since.
