IT WAS’T as easy as some predicted, but Downbytheseaside got the job done.

A prohibitive 1-20 favourite, Downbytheseaside was expected to score with ease in last night’s $500,000 Messenger Stakes, but was pushed to the limit.

Fresh from his demolition of last week’s elimination, Downbytheseaside had the middle leg of Yonkers Raceway’s Pacing Triple Crown to himself – or so people thought!

On a rain-soaked circuit, the three-year-old was forced to dig deep as he scored by a nose from Art Scene, with Funknwaffles third in what was a ‘blanket finish’.

Trained by Brian Brown for owners Country Club Acres, Joe Sbrocco, Richard Lombardo and Diamond Creek Racing, the colt has won eight of his 12 starts this season for a bankroll of $956,216.

By scoring in 1:52.1, Downbytheseaside emulated the feat of his super sire Somebeachsomewhere, which captured the 2008 Messenger Stakes.

Available to ‘Down Under’ breeders this spring via Empire Stallions, Somebeachsomewhere also sired several Aussie winners on the same night as his northern hemisphere son.
