FORMER New Zealander Bit Of A Legend paid a price for the lead, then made his opponents pay the price for giving it to him during Yonkers Raceway’s $55,000 Open Pace.
Pushed forward from barrier six by driver Jordan Stratton, Bit Of A Legend worked to the lead from outsider Caviart Luca after an opening quarter in 26.3 seconds.
With Stratton maintaining a steady tempo with the odds-on favourite, he was never going to be caught, relegating Caviart Luca, Bakersfield and Melmerby Beach to the placings in 1:51.3.
The latter two tied for third.
Owned by the estate of Harry von Knoblauch and trained by Peter Tritton, Bit Of A Legend has won five of his 17 starts for the year.
Prior to the race, Tritton spoke of von Knoblauch, who passed away early this month at age 90.
“Harry was a gentleman who enjoyed racing and not afraid to spend money to get good horses. His daughters want to keep the stable going, and I’m fortunate to train for them,” Tritton said.
