CONTROVERSY has reigned over this year’s Hambletonian at the Meadowlands.
No sooner were What The Hill’s connections celebrating as he captured the $1million event than their joy turned to misery.
As the field return to scale, it was announced a protest had been made against the Ron Burke-trained squaregaiter.
After studying the race replay, judges noted What The Hill had contacted Guardian Angel, forcing it to break strike stride.
A lengthy wait followed before the Hambletonian had its first disqualification in 92 years!
As such, Perfect Spirit, which set the pace, was declared the winner for trainer-driver, Ake Svanstedt.
“It’s a very big,” the Swedish mentor said. “I’m very happy.”
The finishing order after the disqualification saw the favourite Devious Man finish second, with Enterprise third.
