FORMER Australian mare Nike Franco caused a minor upset when too slick in yesterday’s $201,000 Golden Girls at the Meadowlands.
Second elect at $2, Nike Franco rated a modest 2:01.2 over 1800 metres to score from Lady Shadow and Call Me Queen Be.
In doing so, Nike Franco handed Dan Patch and O’Brien Award winner Lady Shadow her first defeat of the season.
Driven by Tim Tetrick, Nike Franco led early before being eased to take a trail and then finished strongly along the stretch.
A Group One winner in Australia, the daughter of Mcardle has won eight of her 13 northern hemisphere starts for trainer Jo Ann Looney-King.
The seven-year-old left ‘Down Under’ with a tally of 22 wins and five placings from 37 outings for a bankroll of $436,547. She has earned $250,279 in the US.
