WHEN Jay and the Americans sang “this magic moment” they certainly did have last Saturday night’s Redcliffe meeting in mind.
But the song title was certainly fitting as Destreos registered his 90th win.
While the victory wasn’t particularly important, the fact the evergreen pacer scored at his 400th start was magical for trainer Ken Rattray.
By facing the starter for the 400th time, Destreos equalled the Australasian record held by Cane Smoke, which raced between August 10, 1983 and September 4, 1991.
“It really was a magic moment to have him win at his 400th start,” Rattray said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better result.”
Driven by Shane Graham, Destreos outstayed his rivals to account for his stablemate Funny Boy and Stormfortheboys in 1:57.4 over 1780 metres.
“I trialled him during the week and he went super, so I expected him to go very close,” Rattray said. “He has pulled up a treat and will be ready to break the record next Saturday night.
“I won’t do much with him this week, just keep him happy and relaxed to be ready for start 401 at Albion Park.”
