CONNECTIONS of handy pacer Bettors Fire are hoping he can begin the new season the same way he ended the previous one – winning.
Racing in career best form, Bettors Fire is engaged in the New Seasons Pace at Gloucester Park, having scored at the venue during his two previous starts.
Drawn perfectly in barrier two, the Kyle Harper-trained gelding has been installed a $1.90 favourite.
“On paper it looks like his race to lose, but you can never under estimate your opposition,” Harper said. “He has been winning from bad draws, so hopefully he can do it from a good draw, which he hasn’t had for a while.
“He is still only 85 per cent fit, but is also a horse that goes well fresh.”
With the latter statement in mind, Harper plans to spell Bettors Fire in preparation for the Perth Inter Dominion in November.
“He will have a couple of weeks off after tonight,” Harper said. “The plans is to keep him fresh going into the series, so I will probably only give him one run leading up to the heats.
“It’s a dream to be in the series, let alone having one which is capable of winning. I’m not saying he is one of the main fancies, but he is capable.
“We will certainly be having a red hot crack.”
